Embracing serverless
Our client was running an Express/NodeJs-based application on a boutique hosting provider, but response times were slow and hosting costs high. We migrated the backend to a pure serverless solution, with an AWS S3/CloudFront front end and Lambda-based API. Not only were costs reduced by 90%+ and page load became near-instant, but the serverless architecture served as a jumping-off point to add additional powerful back-end features.
Pub/Sub hybrid architecture
Our client's Azure environment featured a sizeable SQL Server Instance which powered both the client-facing website and internal data analysis workflows. But queries ran slow. We decoupled the architecture, exposing only a subset of the data to the customer-facing app (via a NoSQL db), and leveraging an existing in-house server as the main data store. Now pages load instantly, and the cloud bill is reduced by over 60%.
Migrating off Auth0
Heroku and Auth0 were some convenient options for this startup to create their app. However, as the user base grew, the cost per active user actually increased. The Cloud Rightsizing Team migrated the solution to the AWS platform with Cognito authentication, future-proofing the architecture so that scaling to hundreds of thousands of Monthly Active Users (MAUs) will have a negligent effect on authentication costs.
